Flinders + Co. opens first retail outlet at South Melbourne Market

Family-owned and run food production and distribution company, Flinders + Co, has opened its first retail outlet this month here at the South Melbourne Market.

Flinders + Co is a primary supplier of premium meat goods to some of Victoria’s best restaurants, including Vue de monde, Movida, Pt. Leo Estate, Omnia Bistro and Scott Picket’s Estelle, Longrain and Chancery Lane.

Founded by David Madden in 2010, the business started as a boutique lamb brand on the small island in the middle of Bass Strait. It soon grew beyond just the distribution of its own lamb, partnering with other outstanding local producers to supply top chefs in Victoria.

The brand is now a meat supplier to some of the best chefs, restaurants and retailers in the country, and carefully select these partnerships based on an alignment of values and vision says James Madden, Managing Director.

The Flinders + Co brand is guided by key principles including ethical farming, sustainable practices and partnering with like-minded people and organisations. South Melbourne Market was an obvious choice for our first retail outlet. The Market champions high quality, local produce, food provenance and environmental sustainability, so it is perfectly aligned to our core values. It is a much-loved foodie destination by the local community and wider Melbourne, and we are proud to now call it home.

In 2018, Flinders + Co became the first meat company in the world to fully offset all carbon emissions from not only the business but every kilogram of meat they sell. The business also runs on 100% renewable energy and has its sights set on eliminating chemicals and reducing plastic packaging from its products.

Flinders + Co want to do more than simply ‘sell food’. We want to ask the hard questions and tackle the big issues. Issues of sustainability, ethics and the environment. Questions of provenance, health and humanity. We want kids to not only understand where their food comes from, but care about this and ensure it informs their own decision making when it comes to food” says Madden.

The new retail outlet will be run by founder (and father to James), David Madden, and will include a range developed for children, featuring meat products that contain over 30% vegetables and are gluten, sodium and preservative-free.

Flinders + Co. is now open in Stall 13 in the Deli Aisle.
