The Best of Spring at South Melbourne Market

One of the season’s highlights is asparagus. Crisp, tender and versatile, it can be grilled for the barbecue, tossed through a fresh salad or served simply with lemon and olive oil. Victorian asparagus is at its best throughout spring, making now the perfect time to enjoy it.
As the weather warms, keep an eye out for sweet corn arriving at our fruit and vegetable traders. Whether charred on the barbecue, folded through salads or served with butter, herbs and a pinch of salt, it is a simple addition to spring entertaining. Corn becomes more abundant as spring moves towards summer, so availability may vary throughout the season.
Spring also marks the return of berries, from sweet strawberries early in the season to blueberries and raspberries as the warmer months approach. Enjoy them fresh, add them to breakfast or use them to brighten cakes, pavlovas and other spring desserts.
It is not only the produce aisles that come alive in spring. Our florists are filled with beautiful seasonal blooms, including lily of the valley, freesias and the much-loved peony. Known for its layers of soft petals, the peony has a short season, generally arriving from late October and reaching its peak in November. Pick up a bunch while they are available and bring a little spring colour home.
