South Melbourne Market named 4th best food market in the world

Published 21 April 2026
South Melbourne Market has earned a top five spot in the World's Best Food Markets, determined by traveller reviews.

At the top of the list sits Reading Terminal Market (Philadelphia), closely followed by Borough Market (London) and Adelaide Central Market.

Driven by hundreds of thousands of traveller reviews, Melbourne’s iconic South Melbourne Market has earned a top-five spot among the world’s best food markets, outranking global icons in Paris, New York and Barcelona.

The ranking, compiled by travel insurance specialist AllClear, analysed nearly 400,000 online reviews to determine which markets consistently deliver standout food experiences. According to the analysis, the rankings were ‘based on the proportion of four and five-star reviews, a metric that highlights popularity and consistency’.

South Melbourne Market boasts 93.4 per cent four or five-star reviews, with reviewers citing the quality food offer, diverse mix of offer and the knowledgeable and friendly traders as reasons to love this local market.

Head of communications at AllClear, Letitia Smith, said: “The most exciting part about travelling for many people is trying new foods, and food markets are one of the best ways to sample lots of different local treats at the same time. We hope the research helps people narrow down their travel choices for the upcoming year and provides inspiration for food lovers to try delicious cuisines all over the world."
