Getting to know: Clare Lonergan

Published 4 May 2018
The owner of Clare's Bears and Wares

Nestled away in aisle F, Clare’s Bears and Wares is a delightful stall overflowing with great quality baby wear, teddy bears, dolls, baby toys and embroidered blankets – some of them hand stitched by Clare herself. This month, we take five with Clare and find out more about her history with the Market.

How long have you been at South Melbourne Market?
I’ve owned my store for three years but been part of the Market for 20. I used to work as a casual here. We’d line up outside from 7am and management would hand pick who was trading for the day. Some days we’d go home with our pockets empty and our still bags full!

What’s your fondest memory of working here at the Market?
I love chatting with tourists. I’ve had a few repeat customers who have visited me on their return to Melbourne. It’s such a pleasure to hear their stories on where they’ve come from and what has brought them here.

Coffee or Tea?

Coffee. Cappuccino. I’ll have my first cup from Burhan’s Espresso, followed by a morning pick-me-up from La Lapa.

Where’s your Market go-to?
I’ll often pop to the Little Town Pie Co. as I am finishing up and grab a quiche to take home for a quick, easy meal.
