Ditch the Fish

As part of our commitment to reducing waste, we have officially ditched the fish and removed single-use plastic soy sauce containers across the Market.
It might seem like a small change, but these little plastics create a big environmental problem. Because of their size and material, they cannot be recycled through standard systems and often end up in landfill or in our waterways.
The Market is proud to be known as Melbourne’s home of fresh seafood. From oysters shucked fresh onsite to the daily catch at our fishmongers, phasing out plastic soy sauce fish is one of the ways we are reducing unnecessary waste while continuing to deliver the experience our customers love.
Our fishmongers, Aptus Seafoods, Gem Pier and South Melbourne Seafoods, along with Yoyo Sushi, no longer offer plastic soy sauce fish.
Instead, think about easy alternatives, such as:
- using the complimentary soy sauce stations onsite
- bring your own reusable container/s or
- simply enjoying soy sauce at home or work when taking away.
This initiative forms part of our 2023-27 Environmental Sustainability Strategy, which sets out clear targets to reduce waste, minimise single-use plastics, protect our local waterways and improve how resources are used across the Market.

South Melbourne Market are proud to partner with The Nature Conservancy's Shuck Don’t Chuck program, where oyster shells from the Market are recycled and returned to Port Phillip Bay to help restore vital shellfish reefs. The Ditch the Fish initiative will directly improve this program, by eliminating the leading contaminant of our shells onsite.
It is all about rethinking waste, from removing unnecessary plastics to giving materials a second life.
