Roast Collection Roast Collection

Simply Spanish on Cecil St are serving up a reinterpretation of a
traditional Spanish peasant dish - a quail, sultana, pine-nut and sherry roast. Succulent, delectable, and made from high quality Victorian produce,
this quail roast is offered on its own ($12.50) or as part of a two course meal with wine ($30).

The special offer is part of the Roast Collection, a series of events run
by the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival team. The events are part of the year-long Put Victoria On Your Table campaign, which aims to encourage consumption and support of local Victorian produce and wine.

So warm yourself up at the Market this June with a special South Melbourne Market version of the roast - brought to you by fresh, local,
Victorian produce.

Farewell, George Karambetsos! Farewell, George Karambetsos!

George Karambetsos from P&G Meats is calling it a day. After 35 years
as a South Melbourne Market Deli Aisle icon, George is leaving the market. George is one of the traditional butchers in the Market, who happily spends the time preparing meat from whole carcasses. His warm service and quality meats are valued highly by both our Greek customers and the wider
meat-loving community. He plans to spend more time with his mother and his wonderful wife Rita, who at her stall, Rita’s Nuts, shows the same passion and commitment to customers and quality.

The Greek tradition continues. George’s shop will be transformed into
South Melbourne Seafoods, operated by John and Yanni, an exciting addition to our deli aisle specialists.

We will miss George greatly and we thank him for his many years of
support and servicing our market customers. Don’t miss your chance to
say goodbye.
Market Prices Lower than the Competition Market Prices Lower
than the Competition

The Market conducted a survey in late April comparing the prices of
24 items at the Market, local supermarkets and the Prahran Market.
To keep things fair, the survey compared the average of three stalls in each category at the Market (meat, chicken, fish, deli etc) with the average of the three local supermarkets (Woolworths at Spotlight, Coles in Clarendon St and Coles in Bay St) and the average of three stalls at Prahran.

The South Melbourne Market did not always have the cheapest item in each category but it was cheaper overall. If you shopped at Woolworths,
you would be paying 14% more and if you shopped at Prahran, you would be paying 13% more than the South Melbourne Market. Obviously, if you shop carefully, you will do even better!

So if fresh produce at the best price is what matters to you, the South Melbourne Market is the only place to shop.

ANF is a premium dog and cat food - it stands for Australian Natural Foods, part of the Nature’s Gift range. It is just like Eukanuba or IAMS and yet, because it is made in Australia, it is half the price per kilo (no transport costs from America and no flash packaging). It is available in any quantity because it comes loose.

Robin from Bob Bon’s Pet Supplies (in Aisle B just off Cecil St) is offering a huge 25% discount – down to $3.40/kg for dog food and $4.90/kg for cat food. The offer is limited to Fridays only – you must take this newsletter item to gain the discount.
Seasonal Produce Seasonal Produce

Winter is almost here, and at the Market we have everything you need
for a cosy night in. Wander through the aisles of fresh food stalls and you’ll find a plethora of delicious winter produce.

Brighten up your day and ward off those cold and flu bugs with some refreshing citrus fruit. Naval oranges, mandarins and grapefruit are all in season right now, and will go down a treat freshly squeezed or as a healthy lunch box snack. You can also pick up a bag of fresh veggies such as leek, pumpkin, beetroot and brussel sprouts for a hearty winter soup, or ask our butchers for some advice on cooking a casserole or delicious roast dinner.

Hanover Donation Hanover Donation

The Market recently gave a donation of books, toys and cash ($935)
to Hanover Welfare Services, a South Melbourne-based agency that helps local residents and families facing housing crises or homelessness. The donations were collected at our pet farm during Christmas and Easter, and will support the hard working team at Hanover, helping those in need. The Market has a strong program of community support and involvement – this is just one way we set ourselves aside from private sector competitors – and helping organisations like Hanover is just one of our many engagements. Hanover’s services rely heavily on donations from the wider community, so if you missed out and would like to know more about donating, please click here.
