Night Market Postponed
Our autumn season of Style After Dark has been postponed because the Market is going through a tremendous period of renewal. The building works would adversely impact the location and experience of the night market for shoppers. As disappointed as we are about the postponement, we are delighted by the works which will guarantee a significantly improved venue and night market experience in spring.

Works Begin
Claypots – Evening Star is coming to the Market. This one will have the same St Kilda music groove but a teppanyaki-style kitchen. Once completed, this will be a new hub for the Market complete with live music. Opening very soon on the corner of Cecil & York Streets.
The LG Kitchen, our new cooking and food demonstration centre will start construction in late March. A fabulous addition to Cecil Street, the cooking school will operate most nights.
Substation – the York Street car park has temporarily lost a dozen spaces so we can build a new substation. The substation’s slab is now in place and the building will soon emerge. The new station will allow us more power generation.
Vegie Lane – Works will very shortly start on a roof over Vegie Lane. This will deliver weather protection for traders, improved temperature control for shoppers and rainwater harvesting to enable the Market to improve its cleaning practices. The works will entail temporary cool rooms placed in the parking bays along the Market side of Coventry Street.

Eat Local
When we sit down to eat, it’s often surprising how little we know about what is on our plate. Each ingredient has typically travelled over 1000 kms, and when we add up the contents of a typical shopping basket, the food miles are equivalent to travelling nearly twice around the Earth.
At South Melbourne Market, we are all for locally grown and produced food because it is better tasting, better for the environment, better for local economies and better for your health. Shoppers will notice communications around the Market for our ‘Eat Local’ campaign – now you’ll be able to choose whether you buy your garlic from Gippsland or Spain. By choosing local garlic, you’ll be reducing your carbon footprint, enjoying seasonal produce and great taste.
